FOUNDERS
Pekiti Tirsia Kali is a combat-oriented system based on techniques of bladed weapon mastery, learning of which concisely overlaps with empty hands technique, comprising slaps, strikes with elbows and knees, as well as with the elements of mat and stance wrestling, peculiar to countering single or multiple opponents.
The origins of Tortal family Kali martial art date back to the 1700s. The system was founded on the island of Panay, and later on the island of Western Negros. The great Tuhon Norberto Tartal (1750-1810) was known as a Kali master. The Tortal family practiced this system to protect its lands. The Tortal family founded its system near 1800, but officially the system was formed in 1897, not also as an art of combat but as of cultural significance as well. The Kali of Tortals was officially registered as Pekiti Tirsia Kali in 1897. Grand Tuhon Segundo Tortal (1840-1930) passed his knowledge to his sons - Conrado, Balbino, Teodorico and Francisco. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines (during the Second World War) Grand Tuhon Balbino fought against the Japanese and died in battle. He took the lives of many Japanese soldiers with his bravery and skills of Pekiti Tirsia Kali.
After the Philippines gained the independence, Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje Jr. assumed the leadership over the system from Grand Tuhon Conrado Tortal. Traditionally, the art was passed on only within the family, and it continued up to 1972 when the legacy of Grand Tuhon Gaje was brought to the world.
Tuhon Romel Tortal is an immediate heir of Pekiti Tirsia Kali, which he studied under the leadership
of his uncle, Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje Jr., and the founder of Pekiti Tirsia Kali World Federation, which was established by him in 2015.

PEKITI TIRSIA KALI SYSTEM
It is a combat-oriented system, unlike other sport-focused Filipino martial arts (FMA). It encompasses various types of bladed and crush weapons mastering:
Single / double stick (single / double sword)
Single knife / Double knife
Espada y Daga (long blade and knife)
Sibat (Malay spear)
Empty hands technique (dumpaq – pangamot – dumog)
Flexible weapons (sarong, malong, belt, whip)
Tomahawk (wassay)
Kerambit (lugod)
Modern weapons: firearms, baton, tactical flashlight, weapons and tools of opportunity.
Pekiti Tirsia Kali system provides technical opportunity for closing with the opponent, using a range of offensive and/or counter-offensive attack combinations, leaving no opportunity for escape. The mastering of movements’ set requires hard work and total dedication. In Pekiti Tirsia Kali system mastery is acquired by drilling in sparring and in close technical exchange with the application of countering and re-countering methods. There is a single set of fighting principles and movements notwithstanding whether armed or unarmed attacker, or defender. This structure allows to acquire practical-oriented combat skills in armed and non-armed engagement more efficiently within a short period of time. This is known as the principle of technology transfer. Mastering of Pekiti Tirsia Kali leads to continuous improvement and adaptation of its methods to new demands. Pekiti Tirsia Kali today is a valuable and practical art of survival. It is effective in combat and indispensable for modern law enforcement agencies and armed forces. This is an ancient art for the present and the future. An important part of Pekiti Tirsia Kali is its positive philosophy: belief in life, success and in good health. The etiquette presupposes professionalism and respect. A skilled fighter does not rely on brutal muscle power but on speed, timing, precision and co-ordination. Pekiti Tirsia Kali offers convenient and logical methods against stronger opponents, regardless of what he is armed with (a knife, empty hands or any other weapon).
